How to make a diamond look larger than its actual size?

 

Whenever one is shopping for diamond rings, one wants to buy the biggest diamond possible. Bigger diamond is always better, but not always affordable. However with few tricks one can make the diamond look bigger.

Diamond can be made to look larger than its actual size. And this can be achieved very easily by choosing the right combination of stone cut, shape and setting. These three characteristics have major impact on how a stone appears.

Choose the Right shape of Diamond.

Unlike the regular round and princess cut diamonds, fancy cut diamonds with their elongated sides tend to seem larger than its true size. Shapes such as oval shaped, marquise cut, heart shaped diamond look bigger than its real carat weight.

Choose the Right Setting

Pave setting – if you want diamond on the shank as well, pave setting works great for it makes many diamonds appear like one. Pave set diamonds have a very unique feeling of the jewelry being rolled into diamonds.

Bezel Setting   

Bezel setting has a metal rim that inscribes the sides of a gemstone and extends slightly above it. White gold or platinum bezel setting merge with the white diamonds and make them appear bigger.

Invisible Setting

Invisible setting is another great option. In this setting gemstones are placed closely and the metal is concealed underneath the stones. Thus instead of a large center stone, you could also go for several smaller gemstones set with invisible setting giving the impression of one large stone.

Ring with Side Stones

Choose a ring with side stones rather than a solitaire diamond rings. Three stone rings are a classic, they look great and have a beautiful underlying meaning as well. The three stones are symbolic of a couple’s past, present and future together.

Shallow cut Diamonds

If your main purpose is to make the diamond look larger than you could go for a shallow cut diamond or a diamond with low girdle. But that does then compromise on the brilliance of the diamond. 

Choosing the right combination of diamond shape and setting can not only help you make the diamond look larger but can even cut down the cost drastically.

Hong Kong’s First De Beers Diamond Auction fetches 4.2m pounds

The Biggest Natural Color Diamond Auction ever happened in Hong Kong, sold the most expensive diamond ever sold in Hong Kong. A 5.16-carat fancy vivid blue diamond that is internally flawless was auctioned for 4.2 m pounds at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. The spectacular, pear-shaped blue diamond is estimated to fetch between US $4.6 m to US $5.8 m (£3.8m) but ultimately purchased at a whopping 4,221,533 pounds . The Auction was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and was a part of Sotheby's Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite Spring Sale 2010.

This rare blue diamond formed the part of legendary De Beers’ Millennium Jewels Collection consist of 12 exceptional diamonds put together to mark the year 2000. The Natural Colored Diamond collection, which took decades to assemble, comprised 12 rare gems all cut and polished by Steinmetz and laser inscribed with a special serial number. Although the diamond was currently part of a private collection, this was the first time that any piece from the collection has been available at auction.

Blue diamonds are among the rarest of all gemstones, their natural blue color to the presence of boron during the stone's formation. These are greatly admired are the highest per-carat priced at auction due to their combination of color, brilliance and rarity that makes them so special. Some of these unique stones were sold for $550,000-$580,000 per carat in the past.
